Having many ongoing medical complications, and being 147cm, I have found it very difficult to fit into the gay community and find a boyfriend.
But just because I have a disability doesn’t mean that I am any more different than you or the person next to you. Just because I have a disability doesn’t mean I don’t want to or can’t work. Just because I have a disability doesn’t mean I can’t or don’t want to have sex.
People with disabilities are just as (if not more) courageous. The amount of pressure, pain, trauma, and harassment that one has to go through if they have a disability is a lot for one to take.
Why is it that just because I have a disability people think that I am “different”? Why is it that because I have a disability, guys don’t look twice at me?
I have a heart, I have a soul, I have a mind. I have a god damn awesome personality and a contagious sense of humour. Did I mention that I have an infectious smile?
I have had a disability my WHOLE entire life and that has never stopped me. In fact I might’ve done more than you. I completed high school, continued my studies with a certificate IV and Diploma of Business. Held three successful jobs and am still working hard. I share my story of hope and survival and have also bloody moved more than 1,200 kilometres away from home.
I have also been through some horrific shit that I don’t wish anyone to go through. I’ve overcome childhood bloody cancer, two brain tumours, scoliosis (that I have for my entire life), braces, and a breast reduction. Oh and I am also GAY!
I am DIFFERENT… I don’t “fit in” to the stereotypical, clique, pigeon- holed box that every gay guy is expected to fit into. Yes I am five-foot nothing, yes I wear glasses, yes I may not fit into all of those boxes that I am expect to tick, doesn’t mean that you should block me!
I have done some pretty awesome things because of my disability, yes I have met some pretty cool people and I have (and still do) have the time of my life and a shit- load of fun doing it!
Shouldn’t we as a GLBTIQ community be embracing diversity? Don’t you think I am diverse?
I may be different, I may not be who you expect (or want) me to be but spend just 5 minutes with me and you will find that I am just like that guy you swiped right. I am just like that guy that you woofed at.
Don’t DIS my ABILITY because as the old saying goes, you should never judge a book by its cover. Read a couple of my pages and I know you will want to come back for more!
